The Old Jewish Cemetery (Stary Zidovsky Hrbitov) is not much bigger than its original size when it was founded in 1478, but for more than 300 years it was the only place where Jews were permitted to bury their dead.
More than 12,000 gravestones are packed in together willy-nilly in the small space but it has been estimated that as many as 100,000 people are buried here in layers, one atop the next.
The most famous and visible tombstone is that of Rabbi Low, and visitors from all over the world place coins on the little stone lip as a mark of respect.
The cemetery complex is also home to the Pinkas Synagogue, Prague's second oldest, which serves as a memorial to Jewish Czechoslovakians imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp and later executed in Nazi death camps.
