Situated on a hillside on the right bank of the Vlatava, Prague Zoo spreads over an area of 64 hectares. There are about 2,500 animals spread over 500 species, a good number of which are rare in the wild. The Zoo has shown considerable success in it's breeding programmes over the years.
It was hit hard by the devastating floods of a couple of years ago, and has put in place a programme of recovery, so the lower area was still being redeveloped mid 2004.
There is an exciting chair lift to the upper area which, because of it's height above the rest of the zoo, remained untouched by the floods. At this level, it is largely in woodland and meandering paths lead you round the enclosures. The animals here looked in excellent condition and many of them had young, which is usually a good sign that they are happy in their environment.
Leave the picnic basket at home, there are places to eat and drink in the gardens and there is a gift shop too!
Easily reached by Metro and bus from the centre of the city, the zoo is a great place to take the kids on a bright sunny day, or if you don't have any, or they have flown the nest, borrow some! Oh! and don't forget to take your camera.
